TPA Unveils $1.5 Billion Airside D Project, Marking One of Tampa's Largest Developments

Tampa International Airport (TPA) has just unveiled an exciting new design for Airside D, one of the city's most significant ongoing projects. This new terminal, set to accommodate both domestic and international flights, is poised to play a crucial role in supporting the region's growth, with plans to serve up to 35 million passengers annually by 2037—an impressive increase from the current 25 million.

The updated design, crafted by Hensel Phelps, the construction firm overseeing the project, was presented to the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board in August. This latest concept marks a significant improvement over the original design introduced when Hensel Phelps secured the contract in 2023. The new terminal boasts a more efficient orthogonal shape, optimizing space and operations.

Airside D will span 600,015 square feet and feature two levels plus a mezzanine, housing two airline lounges with stunning views of the airfield and the bay. The terminal will also include a state-of-the-art International Passenger Arrival Processing Area on the first floor, along with a shuttle system and guideway. At the heart of the terminal, travelers will enjoy a variety of shopping and dining options, all within a spacious area offering 360-degree views of the gates. The design emphasizes intuitive wayfinding and abundant natural light, creating a welcoming and efficient environment for passengers.

With a preliminary cost estimate of around $1.5 billion, the project reflects the increased scope, size, and complexity of the terminal, as well as challenges such as global inflation, supply chain issues, and rising labor costs. The funding for Airside D will come from a mix of Airport reserves, bonds, and grants.

To keep the community informed, TPA has launched a new website where the public can learn more about Airside D and explore business opportunities related to the project. As design work progresses, final plans are expected to be completed by 2025, with construction beginning later this year and the terminal set to open in 2028.
